This is the first version of my couch painting. Simpler, blue/green-er, good. The second one is stronger, but I like this one a lot. I’m using purple for black in a lot of this, which has become more and more the move I’m doing.
I think there is a settled, content feeling to this arrangement. The light and the quietness of the room- the incidental quality of the dead flowers outside, the colors. I tried to enhance what I liked about the picture in this- the simplicity, the presence of the couch almost as a character or protagonist weirdly.
I’m not sure couch portraitist is a lane. It seems like there is a rich vein to mine of studies of furniture. I’m sure someone is doing that exclusively, relentlessly somewhere in New York or Beijing. I’m happy with this and the other one- we’ll see if there is a third couch.
