Trains/Dragons

One of my favorite paintings I’ve ever made, Trains/Dragons is sort of an intersection for me of two big themes: The train as a meaningful companion during a certain chapter of my life. I lived in a small apartment and a train would go buy multiple times a day out of my window. While I…

What should I do next with portraits?

Trying to get back to portraits- my portraits have been a little weak for a long time, and I’m trying to think through what direction I’d like to go in next. Had a lot of time in New Orleans to try to sketch this stuff out. Some of the less accurate ones have some…

Cabinet Painting (Pretty Excited)

The first picture is what will go inside the cabinet, the second painting is the outside of the cabinet, and the third painting is the the religious art I’m trying to echo with my broken down church painting. Pretty excited! More later.

Garbage Trucks

Wanted to follow up with something to Trains/Dragons. I’m thinking of calling this Garbage Trucks/Black Bears. Not a hundred percent sure about the name. I know what I was trying to do- and I got somewhere good. Happy with this one.

Church on Meadow Street/What House Will You Build Me

I made this painting because I’ve been thinking about how more and more churches are losing congregations. I think there’s a lot of reason for this- first, I think there’s genuinely less interest in traditional Christianity. Secondly, I think that many traditional churches are opting for non traditional spaces. As someone who has a traditional…

Baseball Evolution!

So I decided to do baseball paintings while doing my painting “Mcdonald’s World!” You might be wondering (if you are a bi-yearly reader) where is “Mcdonald’s World!”? Well I broke it! I broke it so hard! If you keep paintings in your car and then also you glued them together with (apparently) really bad…

Living Rooms #2

This painting is an effort to create a more turbid, tense living room scene than the one of me in my apartment. I used blue and red and green to create a sense of tension. The couch and the lamp start a sort of triangle of objects/motion that move towards the door into the…

Living Rooms #1

I’ve been trying to articulate the emotions of this painting. It’s been a struggle, as I think “sad” or “lonely” isn’t quite right. “Luminous” sounds good, but is also not a feeling. After thinking for a while, I’ve come closer to the word “vertiginous”. While I don’t think this painting produces any sort of a…

Quest of the 7 Dragons: Gosh, Sadness

So, tough couple of months. Lots of huge life changes, including a major car accident late at night. Weird, difficult other stuff. Anyway, in order to have something positive to focus on, I thought it was time to move forward to completing a dragon for my (now defunct?) life project. Magnet dragons got lost in…

Paper Mill

Yes, that is a train sculpture. Many of you know one of my secret works is the sculpture of a lion fish I put in my parents’ basement. He swims down there all year round and is a great guy. This is the first sculpture I’ve done since then. They are remarkably similar.

Chopped up Refrigerator Dragon!

Hopefully the first of many! I’m going to make a whole lot of dragons that I can magnet to things and start mixing and matching them. And here is one for size/context
